Safety is at the centre of our operations

Safety is the cornerstone of our operations. We strive daily to promote safe working habits and conditions. The best practices are created through teamwork.

We ensure occupational and traffic safety together with our customers and partners. We develop our operations continuously based on our predefined objectives. Our focus is on preventive safety work.

This work is producing results. During the last few years, we have seen improvements in the rate of occupational accidents across every VR Transpoint business division. In addition, we have witnessed a decline in the number of shunting deviations that were related to freight wagon arrangement work.

Safety is a professional skill

Any work that involves heavy equipment and large masses requires special care and expertise. Those on our staff who work in railway traffic shunting yards and road transport are extensively trained and oriented in issues related to safety.

For those who are involved with railway safety, we arrange annual traffic safety training to help maintain their professional skills. In road logistics, we train our drivers and contract carriers as well as their drivers according to the changing demands of the transport industry.

In addition, our staff receive separate safety training for the work that they conduct at any of our customers’ or partners’ service points and meticulously follow all guidelines while working in these areas.

Any current safety matters are reviewed regularly at our workplace safety briefings. We also strive to increase safety awareness with the help of safety-oriented campaigns, competitions and communications.

A focus on equipment and conditions

Our employees are issued with proper protective clothing, safety shoes and other personal protectors, and we monitor their use. We involve our staff in the development of their equipment.

We have also invested in the safety of our rolling stock. For example, our rail logistics freight wagons have been fitted with new handrails and steps, making them safer than ever.

On our shunting yards, we pay attention to working condition safety in collaboration with the Finnish Transport Agency and private railway network owners and maintenance personnel.

Continuous improvement as part of our everyday activities

We investigate any safety deviations carefully, including any cases that are reported by our customers and partners. We seek out the causes and implement any corrective measures in cooperation. We always strive to learn from any deviations that have occurred.

We have developed our accident investigation process, and our safety monitoring is now more comprehensive than ever before. We develop our safety-oriented practices and management with regular audits. The safety of our operations has been certified.

Whenever possible, we include industry and research institute best practices as part of our activities.

Towards safety partnerships

We are eager to promote safety by further increasing our collaboration with our customers and logistics chain partners.

We have implemented joint risk surveys in rail and road traffic and we have also arranged training sessions on the handling and loading of rolling stock.

Our goal is to create a safety partnership that will benefit everyone involved.
